Sara and I got to know many of the vendors at Levitate. We definitely had our favorites though. There were a lot of brands selling concentrates now.
The new thing in the industry was getting concentrates that were “nug run”. Some entrepreneurs started using more shake and left over plant material to make cheaper concentrates. This led to more inferior products on the market.
When I say a product is inferior, I mean they did not get you as high or last as long. Concentrates or wax made from left over plant material and shake can give people head aches and make them sleepy when they dab it.
Other brands started strictly using intact weed pieces or nugs (nuggets) to make their concentrates. They advertised their products as nug run and charged more money than the market standard.
Scientifically nug run was better mainly due to THC content. Plant material and shake had less. Keeping weed in nug form preserved the THC crystals and using it made your wax better.
The sad thing was majority of the legit licensed medical dispensaries were so behind the trends, they did not even know what nug run was and only carried inferior cheap wax similar to poop soup.
One of our favorite brands always had nug run for cheap. It was good quality and because I kept coming back each week and buying a week supply for two, the vendor gave us a discount.
After six months Levitate got shut down. The owner of the venue where it was hosted decided to stop allowing them to do the events.
I was able to get in contact with some of the vendors from Levitate on Instagram. They told me the majority of the vendors were moving to another event called “Secret Sesh”.
I had heard of Secret Sesh before. Jason used to vend at their events. Secret Sesh was considered the best weekly cannabis event in Los Angeles. Possibly the world.
Their events were hosted every Sunday night at a nightclub in Downtown LA called 333 Live.
Life has a habit of coming full circle. 333 Live was down the street from the Fetish Chamber. They used the same off ramp from the freeway. There were only a few blocks in-between the two locations. Not only that but 333 Live had also hosted many of Paris Duncan’s events during the height of our war. I was secretly excited to see what it actually looked like inside.
Sara was reluctant to start driving to Downtown LA again. Initially she was angry and refused to go in the new sesh. There was a paid parking lot right outside the venue where Sara sat and waited in the car.
Secret Sesh was a lot more popular than Levitate. There was a line that curled around the block and down the street it was so long. People in line advised me that you needed to show up an hour before it started to get a good place in line.
The first few times I went to Secret Sesh I ended up waiting in the long line. Sara is not a patient person and was really annoyed when I finally came out of the sesh and back to the car. She told me:
"If you keep taking this long, I might just leave you here!"
On my third visit I noticed someone go up to one of the security guards, slip him a $10 bill and say, “Express line”. The security guard let him go right in without waiting.
The next time I came I tried the express line. I went up to the same security guard, handed him $10. He looked at me weird. I said, “express line please.”
He looked at me for a few more seconds and then said “Ok” and let me in.
I came to discover there was no express line. The security guard was running his own side hustle. He took care of me for years. I never waited in line and always impressed my friends who tagged along.
Secret Sesh had lots of new vendors I had never heard of, but they were good. They even had legal dispensary vendors selling their products for cheaper than dispensaries and no taxes.
One white guy with glasses spoke on a microphone on stage throughout the event. He was the event host and went by the alias Adam Ill. He talked about different products and introduced musical acts. They even did giveaways and raffles. His catch phrase was shouting "WHAT!??" loud and drawn out.
I came to learn who the people behind the event really were. Adam was of course the host but the man pulling the strings behind the curtain was called Secret Sesh Tim. He had an entire social media following and presence online. He was like a cannabis community celebrity. Occasionally you might see him walking around the event, speaking to random vendors.
Secret Sesh Tim had built an entire team to help advertise and manage the events. I started to recognize them at their various posts throughout the venue. I paid attention to the products they purchased and the vendors they were friends with.
One of my new favorite brands was an edible company that made medicated slushies. They were called Terp Slurp and their mascot was a stoned looking Yeti. The first time I walked past their booth on my way out, the owner "talked me into" taking a mini sample cup to try for free.
"What the hell is that? Where's mine?" Sara playfully questioned as I returned to the car with our haul of goods from the sesh.
I had already finished the cup without even thinking about it. It was empty so there was nothing to give Sara.
I had to get Sara, her own slushie on our next trip.
