After all the drama with my former best friend Jason I had basically avoided the cannabis community. I was frequently going from dispensary to dispensary chasing new cheaper prices. All along dependent on Sara or Kitty giving me rides. They both never wanted to give me rides to go buy weed even though they were smoking half of it.
I had a truck, but it was old and beat up. Majority of the good dispensaries were 30-45 minutes away in DTLA. My truck might overheat before I got there. On top of that. I used the truck for work, and I kept lots of tools in the back. Most of these DTLA dispensaries were not in good areas.
There was a good chance my truck would be completely ransacked by the time I got out.
This made me reliant on Sara or Kitty to drive me in one of their cars.
Back in the happy days when Leo and I had the grow op, I had gained a reputation among the Safehaven regulars and staff as someone who always had really good weed. We also had our secret edible business.
Over the years since, people frequently would ask Sara if we were still making edibles.
Edibles at dispensaries were overpriced and unreliable. They were not very potent. Sara and I enjoyed eating edibles but did not want to pay too much for crappy edibles from dispensaries.
I invested in some extra weed one week when we picked up our usual supply and I used it to make edibles.
Sara and I had decided we had always wanted to make weed gummy bears. It was actually pretty simple to make gummy bears, but majority of the recipes involved using alcohol-based tinctures. I decided to try and experiment using tincture made of vegetable glycerin, the way Leo and I used to do it.
Sara had to help me make the gummy bears. While pouring the gummy concoction into molds, the liquid would solidify quickly if not constantly stirred. You could waste $50 worth of tincture in 30 seconds.
One person had to stir the pot while another filled the molds with the gummy liquid.
Sara had actually gone to professional cooking school in Las Vegas but dropped out after a change of heart. She was still an excellent cook. Between my cannabis skills and her culinary skills, we made a good team and some excellent gummies.
Over time we would experiment with all different flavors and brands. Some of our bests were made from Jolly Rancher's inspired Jello mix.
We wanted to determine the perfect number of gummy bears needed to actually feel high, so we did tastings with our friends. We gave people with all different tolerance levels a chance to contribute feedback. In the end we estimated 10-15 gummy bears were required to have a decent experience and this was equal to between 100 to 150mg.
I wanted to keep the prices as affordable as possible. Dispensaries charged over $20 for 100mg edibles. My thought was typically for a one-time session of smoking weed it should cost around $5. So, one edible should be around $5. Suddenly we were back in business selling edibles.
Sara would sell them to her coworkers and friends from the events. Occasionally I would sell some at Club Anarchy, but I had to always stay ahead of Leo. For the most part Sara was our saleswoman.
I ended up creating a brand and label with a little picture of Sara wearing a nurse's outfit. We called our brand Tetra's Tasties.
I had known about cannabis events in our area for quite some time. But truth be told I was terrified of seeing Jason at one of the events. It was not so much I was terrified as I was embarrassed or felt a sense of defeat going to an event and seeing him there vending and me a customer.
Like a stalker I figured out which events Jason's brand was vending at and which ones he wasn't. There was one event in Carson not far from our house that I decided to check out. It was called Levitate.
I convinced Sara to take me with the initial plan of scouting out the event to see if it was worth vending our edibles at in the future. I was not really expecting to want to spend money myself.
It turns out the event was really cool. It was like a farmer's market, but all the vegetables were weed products. The prices were insanely good.
The event took place in a large empty warehouse. They played music and had food. One woman was giving out cannabis oil massages. The vibes were incredible.
You could get almost anything cannabis related. Weed by the pound in the giant see through bags for cooking turkeys. Tons of homemade edibles.
Baked goods, cotton candy, pudding cups, even other gummy candies. Different types of topical and CBD lotions. Pretty much anything weed related there was someone selling it.
It was like a warehouse filled with people like me who loved the plant and wanted to create their own cannabis brands. The only difference was these people were actually doing it. For once I felt like I was somewhere I belonged.
We ended up coming back on a weekly basis just to buy our weed and hang out. We would talk to the vendors and ended up trading our gummies for products they had.
The events were essentially the answer to my prayers in regard to having a regular cheap source of weed. We would never need to go to dispensaries again.
