One night Sara suggested we go to a local bar called Pitcher Place for some drinks with a few friends from high school.
The night went by pretty calmly. I had invited John Ripley, and Sara had invited Mandy, and they were hitting it off. They were both alcoholics, so they had that in common. I was excited at the prospects of us potentially double dating in the future. I shared a pitcher of bud light with John while Sara drank Cactus Cooler shots with a few girls. We were all sat out on the outdoor patio at our local sports bar.
At one point I had to pee, so I went inside to use the bathroom. Afterwards as I walked out on the patio, I overheard Sara and her friend's conversation.
"Is this the same guy you were making out with on the bar last weekend?"
"No that was Kyle!" Sara responded.
"Whose Kyle?" I asked as I walked up.
Sara was surprised to see me. Her friend sort of walked off to another group of our friends and joined their conversation.
"I'm going to be honest with you Jay, Kyle is a guy I met at the bar last weekend. I had a little too much to drink and ended up going home with him. It meant nothing though, it was bad sex and deep down I want to be with you."
Looking back now, I probably could have taken that as a warning sign. In all honesty though I was way too focused on the possibility of Sara dressing up like a nurse and dominating me.
For the first few days after hearing about Kyle I was a bit angry and was starting to try and not spend as much time with Sara. I felt like she had been playing games with me. Flirting and acting interested just to get free weed. She started hanging out with Jack and Jenny again.
A week after the night at Pitcher Place, Sara was at a party at Jack’s house and was offered a plateful of cookies and baked goods she assumed were infused with weed. Sara ate quite a few of them. Then Jack started to flirt with Sara and get handsy.
When Sara reacted negatively Jack started being rude and aggressive.
Sara texted me and asked what I was doing.
I just happened to be at John’s house who lived a few blocks away from Jack. Sara asked if she could come over and then ended up leaving to come hang out with me and John.
She brought us each an edible she smuggled in her purse.
After about 30 minutes the edibles kicked in really strong for Sara and she ended up so intoxicated she could not handle herself. She was laying on the sidewalk outside John's house with the side of her cheek pressed to the ground claiming to be too dizzy to walk or stand. I think they had actually given her cookies that had magic mushrooms in it or some kind of date rape drug.
Sara was living in a studio behind her conservative grandparent’s house and showing up in this condition was not an option.
I took care of her. I drove her over to her Godmother's house in her car despite the fact I had no license. I showed up around 10pm ringing the doorbell while Sara sat in the car.
Her Godmother had only met me a few weeks earlier and did not initially want to open the door when she saw me through the peep hole so late at night unannounced.
I explained the situation and led her to Sara out in the car.
She let us in and prepared a few blankets and pillow for Sara in her living room. I sat with Sara for hours until she was able to fall asleep.
Then I walked home so she would have her car to drive home in the morning.
The next morning when she was feeling normal, Sara’s Godmother reminded her what had happened. She described me as Sara’s knight in shining armor.
Sara later told me that this was when she fell in love with me. She felt taken care of and safe with me. I was recognized as her hero, and we entered an official relationship.
That day I made her a promise that as long as she was with me, I would always handle getting her weed. She would no longer need to deal with shady people like Jack.
